Shop for SCD! Brands & Tips

The SCD diet is EXTREMELY strict, especially with store-bought products. It talks about a lot of hidden starches and other ingredients not listed that can possibly contaminate the product and cause inflammation. Well, I was all for the drastic diet change but really wanted to find products to help me at least a little in the kitchen. I really didn't want to make my tomato sauces out of fresh tomatoes because of the amount of labor that goes into it. So, I searched the shelves for things that are at least labeled with all legal ingredients. That is how I have done this diet from day one and it seems to be just fine for me :) So, below I listed lots of little tips and things that I use to help with the SCD diet ;) Don't forget, check every label for illegal ingredients!

Note: These products are products that I have discovered by reading the back of the labels. There are sometimes hidden ingredients I have heard in some brands, obtaining a letter from the manufacturer is the only way to be sure. I take my chances with the label.

-Canned Tomatoes
Hunts Tomato Paste, Diced Tomatoes, Crushed Tomatoes (NOT THE SAUCE, it's illegal)

-Beef Broth - Imagine Organic Brand

-Chicken Broth - Imagine Organic Brand, Low sodium

-Chaokoh Coconut Milk, canned

-Spices
I use regular Garlic powder and spices and doesn't seem to bother me. Always check the ingredients to be sure nothing illegal.

-Drinks

Apple Juice - ( NOT FROM CONCENTRATE)
Florida's Natural Apple Juice
365 Brand -Wholefoods

Orange Juice - (NOT FROM CONCENTRATE)
Florida's Natural Orange Juice
Tropicana Premium Orange Juice
365 Brand Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice - Wholefoods

Dole canned Pineapple Juice (NOT FROM CONCENTRATE)

Welches 100% Grape Juice (From Concentrate is ok) Juices from concentrate are not aloud because some companies that make the concentrate have other added ingredients. Welches Grape, Red grape and white grape do not have added sugars in their concentrate.

Knudsens "Just Juice"
-Just Tart Cherry
-Just Black Cherry
-Just Blueberry
-Just Cranberry
-Just Pomegranite
-Just Concord Grape

Alcohol
Good old White Vodka or Dry White or Red Wines for Alcohol, My favorite drink is OJ, Pineapple juice & vodka ;)

-Almond Flour/Meal
I use Almond Meal from Trader Joe's now for $3.99 a lb. I think it works the same as almond flour honestly, its just darker. There are little pieces of skins in there but they are so fine it doesn't matter to me. It is still waaaay finer than I can get my Almond flour homemade and much easier :)

You can also shell and grind them yourself! Trader Joe's has great prices on nuts.
See the Prepare SCD Page for Instructions.

-Hot Dogs
Applegate Hot Dogs- I'm pretty sure every  hot dog (not sausage) is legal. Check the labels anyways ;) These are great, my favorite are the beef. The chicken once have really tough skin but I just skinned it AFTER it's cooked and it tastes good.

-Bacon
Usually any of the low-sodium Bacons are sugar free. They say cured with sugar even though they are sugar free but i have found that this does not effect me. Make sure and check the labels for other ingredients also! If you want a more legal bacon not cured with sugar, USWellness meats have some REAL sugar free bacon.

-Hot Sauce

Frank's Original Hot Sauce

Tabasco Sauce

Soy Sauce

Tamari Soy Sauce - Gluten free!

-Snacks

Larabars! These are a great little snack I stumbled upon at Trader Joe's! Totally SCD legal and delicious ;)

That's it. Fruit Bars. Another packaged SCD snack! YAY =D I have to admit, the SCD diet can be exhausting sometimes preparing everything from scratch. Things like this are like heaven to me :)

Pork Rinds! I have to admit, I am not a big fan of plain old Pork Rinds, BUT! They are legal ;) Check the ingredients to be sure they only contain pork and salt. I have heard they go well with dips like guacamole, spinach dip, Bean or cheese dips. Recipes to come :)

MORE TO COME!

  6. If just starting out, you may want to be careful with too much acidic foods (tomato products, sauces). It took me 10 years on SCD before my body let me eat tomatoes again. Just stick with diet and eat what body allows, but stay faithful - God first, Diet second.

  7. I contacted Trader Joe's and they list 100% of ingredients in their private label brand. This has given me more freedom to use store bought items. I like their Trader Jose's Salsa Autentica, Trader Joe's Real Mayonnaise Preservative Free unsweetened, Trader Joe's Organic Peanut Butter, Trader Joe's Light Coconut Milk, Trader Joe's Tomato Sauce, Trader Joe's Tomato Paste, Trader Joe's Diced Tomatoes, Trader Joe's Whole Tomatoes, Trader Joe's Organic Pumpkin, Trader Joe's Almond Butter, Trader Joe's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Trader Joe's Clarified Butter (ghee). There are more that these are what I have in my pantry at the moment :) enjoy!

    3. My daughter has been SCD for several years and she missed mayo and soy sauce products. Primal avocado mayo is legal according to her nutritionist and the only soy sauce product is coconut amino acid.

  8. I thought all hot dogs are illegal on SCD because they are processed meat. Are there some that are legal?

  9. Hello,
Thank you for helping me with your blog. I was wondering if you have received confirmation from Imagine regarding the scd legality of their chicken broth? I would like to use it, but want to be certain it doesn't contain any hidden illegals.
    Thanks,
    Dave

  10. Tamari Soy Sauce may be gluten free but, as it's made from soy, it's not legal. :\ Raman Prasad has a pretty good recipe for an alternative though.

  13. There is no legal letter for the Hunt's tomato products. Without that, they cannot be considered legal. A legal letter for Cento tomato products exists. Imagine beef broth is not legal: it contains caramel color (which is sugar) and "natural flavors" which are not allowed, and unnamed spices which could include sugar or starch. The chicken broth contains "natural chicken flavor" which we don't know what it is. Canned coconut milk is problematic. Most of it contains illegal gums -- and sometimes, the gums aren't listed. No apple juice is legal; it must be apple cider because often a "juice" may say "!00% apples" when what they have done is extracted sugar from dying apples and add it to the juice -- and because it is "made from apples" they do not have to list the sugar as an ingredient. Dole Pineapple Juice used to be legal, but it is problematic. Do NOT get the one with added calcium because the calcium has a starch base. Tj's almond meal has SKINS in it. While some people may tolerate them, they can make a person very sick. THat is why BLANCHED almond flour is recommended. Applegate hotdogs are not legal. Applegate has refused to provide a letter because "ingredients may change." FRanks hot sauce is not legal because it contains garlic powder, and we do not know what the garlic powder may contain. Gluten-free soy sauce is still SOY sauce, and is not legal. At one time, wheat-free starch-free tamari was permitted, but too many people were becoming ill as a result of using it. Some Larabars are nominally legal, but these are easy to over-indulge on, and can cause major issues. In addition, the company which makes them was bought out by one of the big corps and so there is no guarantee that ingredients are not being substituted. One should be wary of something like the That's It fruit bars because one does not know if fruit-derived sugar was added, nor does one know what processing aids may have been used. Processing aids can majorly affect the legality of a product, and processing aids do not hare to be listed on the label.

  14. These foods/drinks may not be affecting you nearly as much as other SCD illegal foods/drinks, but that doesn't make them SCD legal.

  15. I'm glad someone spoke out about this list, like 90% of it is illegal scd items. The Original Tobasco sauce is pretty much the only scd legal item here.
